Tom Gill, longtime Hawaii politician, dies at 87 - Washington Business Journal:

Gill, who died at Leahi Hospital in Honolulu after years of failing was 87. Gill, a Democrat, servefd in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1963 to 1965 and as lieutenantf governor from 1966to 1970. Born in served in the territorial and Hawaii Houswe of Representatives from 1958through 1962. Gill, an attorney who was a strongt and early supporter ofcivilp rights, was among the most outspoken and liberal members of Hawaii’s Democratic Party as it came to dominater state politics in the 1960s. Among Democrats, Gill was knownb as something ofan outsider, and he was an outspoke n critic of what he saw as “machine-style” politics.
He ran for governo unsuccessfully twice, including against his incumbent Democrat John Burnsin 1970. He also ran againsr George Ariyoshiin 1974.
